Carol Guzy, the first woman to receive a Pulitzer Prize for spot news photography, received her most recent Pulitzer in 2000 for her touching photographs of Kosovo refugees.

The above picture portrays Agim Shala, a two-year-old boy, who is passed through a fence made with barbed wire to his family. Thousands of Kosovo refugees were reunited and camped in Kukes, Albania.
9. War Underfoot (Carolyn Cole)
Los Angeles Times photographer Carolyn Cole took this terrifying photo during her assignment in Liberia. It shows the devastating effects of the Liberian Civil War.

Bullet casings cover entirely a street in Monrovia. The Liberian capital was the worst affected region, because it was the scene of heavy fighting between government soldiers and rebel forces.

Neal Ulevich won the 1977 Pulitzer Prize for a “series of photographs of disorder and brutality in the streets of Bangkok, Thailand” (Pulitzer.com).

The Thammasat University Massacre took place on October 6, 1976. It was a very violent attack on students who were demonstrating against Field Marshall Thanom Kittikachorn.

F. M. T. Kittikachorn was a dictator who was planning to come back to Thailand. The return of the military dictator from exile provoked very violent protests. Protestors and students were beaten, mutilated, shot, hung and burnt to death.
7. After the Storm (Patrick Farrell)
Miami Herald photographer Patrick Farrell captured the harrowing images of the victims of Haiti in 2008. Farrell documented the Haitian tragedy with impressive black-and-white stills. The subject of “After the Storm” is a boy who is trying to save a stroller after the tropical storm Hanna struck Haiti.

6. The Power of One (Oded Balilty)
In 2006, Israeli authorities ordered the evacuation of illegal outposts, such as Amona. Oded Balilty, an Israeli photographer for the Associated Press, was present when the evacuation degenerated into violent and unprecedented clashes between settlers and police officers. The picture shows a brave woman rebelling against authorities.

Like many pictures on this list, “The Power of One” has been another subject of major controversy. Ynet Nili is the 16-year-old Jewish settler from the above picture. According to Ynet, “a picture like this one is a mark of disgrace for the state of Israel and is nothing to be proud of. The picture looks like it represents a work of art, but that isn’t what went on there. What happened in Amona was totally different.” Nili claims the police beat her up very harshly. “You see me in the photograph, one against many, but that is only an illusion – behind the many stands one man – (Prime Minister Ehud) Olmert, but behind me stand the Lord and the people of Israel.”
5. World Trade Center 9/11 (Steve Ludlum)
The power of Steve Ludlum’s photos are astounding, and the written description only tends to dilute the impact. The consequences of the second aircraft crashing into New York’s WTC were devastating: fireballs erupted and smoke billowed from the skyscrapers anticipating the towers’ collapse and monstrous dust clouds.

4. After the Tsunami (Arko Datta)
One of the most representative and striking photos of the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami was taken by Reuters photographer Arko Datta in Tamil Nadu. He won the World Press Photo competition of 2004. Kathy Ryan, jury member and picture editor of The New York Times Magazine, characterized Datta’s image as a “graphic, historical and starkly emotional picture.”

“After the Tsunami” illustrates an Indian woman lying on the sand with her arms outstretched, mourning a dead family member. Her relative was killed by one of the deadliest natural disasters that we have ever seen: the Indian Ocean tsunami.

3. Bhopal Gas Tragedy 1984 (Pablo Bartholomew)
Pablo Bartholomew is an acclaimed Indian photojournalist who captured the Bhopal Gas Tragedy into his lens. Twenty-six years have passed since India’s worst industrial catastrophe injured 558,125 people and killed as many as 15,000. Because safety standards and maintenance procedures had been ignored at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, a leak of methyl isocyanate gas and other chemicals triggered a massive environmental and human disaster. Photographer Pablo Bartholomew rushed to document the catastrophe. He came across a man who was burying a child. This scene was photographed by both Pablo Bartholomew and Raghu Rai, another renowned Indian photojournalist. “This expression was so moving and so powerful to tell the whole story of the tragedy”, said Raghu Rai.
2. Operation Lion Heart (Deanne Fitzmaurice)
Pulitzer Prize award winning photojournalist Deanne Fitzmaurice won the highly respected award in 2005 for the photographic essay “Operation Lion Heart.”

“Operation Lion Heart” is the story of a 9-year-old Iraqi boy who was severely injured by an explosion during one of the most violent conflicts of modern history – the Iraq War. The boy was brought to a hospital in Oakland, CA where he had to undergo dozens of life-and-death surgeries. His courage and unwillingness to die gave him the nickname: Saleh Khalaf, “Lion Heart”.

Fearing snakes is more than a phobia. Deadly snakes are a reality. Their environments include land as well as the ocean. The sea snake evolved from the Australian land snake and is closely related to the cobra. It is a venomous reptile that lives in warm waters and tropical areas, from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific.

Their venom is one of the most powerful neurotoxins in the world. The bite is painless but symptoms such as spasms, stiffness and even respiratory paralysis occur within an hour. Although they won’t attack unless provoked, their poison is more potent than that of land snakes. However, they can become more aggressive in the mating season.
Rattlesnakes are native to the desert areas of the Americas. There are many species of rattlesnakes but their common trait is the rattles in their tails that are used to warn enemies. The reason why they are so deadly is the speed with which they can attack, which is often underestimated by victims, and the effects of their venom. The hemotoxic poison destroys tissue and degenerates organs. Some species have neurotoxic venom. This causes the nervous system to shut down. Both are fatal if left untreated.
The Inland Taipan is considered to be the most venomous snake of all. It lives in the dry plains of Australia. The toxicity of its venom has the potential to kill a human in less than 45 minutes. Luckily, this snake is shy and reclusive and there is anti-venom available.
However, the most venomous snake in the world is not necessarily the most dangerous. The Sri Lankan Russell’s Viper is more dangerous mainly because of the fact that Sri Lanka doesn’t manufacture an anti-venom for this species. This results in many fatalities.

Oman Builds World’s Wonderful and Largest Marble Mosaic

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said’s accession to the throne of Oman, his subjects commissioned the world’s largest marble mosaic.

The people of Oman consider Sultan Qaboos bin Said is considered responsible for the kingdom’s prosperity, so they decided to honor the anniversary of his rule by making a unique mosaic portrait. Measuring a staggering 8.30 meters in length and 5.30 meters in width, the spectacular masterpiece depicts the sultan in a position that best captures His Majesty’s humbleness. As the sultan rarely makes public appearances, the 15 artists who worked on the project had only a photograph, taken by his private photographer, to work with.

Apart from its size, the world’s largest marble mosaic impresses through the fact that it’s made up of 128,274 individual marble pieces, using 90 natural shades of marble mined from the mountains and sea beds of Oman. Blocks of marble were meticulously chosen and mined exclusively for the project.

The team of 15 artists from the UK and Bahrain spent around 120 days carefully placing each tile in the intricate mosaic, working an exhausting 12 hours a day. The face of the sultan is incredibly detailed, and his mustache and beard are made from the sultan’s favorite stone, brought all the way from Italy. The face alone took the artists 40 days to complete.

1. Ebenezer Place – Scotland
With just one address on the street (No 1) Ebenezer Place, in Wick, Caithness, Scotland was awarded the Guinness Book of Records title for the Worlds Shortest Street. This tiny little street measures in at a measly 2.06m or six feet and 9 inches. Better, make sure you don’t blink or it just might
pass you by!

2. Yonge St – Ontario, Canada
Looking for something a bit longer? We it looks like we have found it. Measuring in at an astonishing 1,896 km or approximately 1178.12 miles, Yonge St. was at one time awarded the title of the world's longest street in the Guinness Book of World Records. Yonge St. is the main road that runs between two major lakes in Ontario Canada, Lake Ontario and Lake Simcoe. This remarkable street runs all the way from the United States Minnesota border and wanders along Highway 11 all the way to the lakeshores of Toronto. To think about the distance in another way; this one street is long enough to run from San Diego, California, to Seattle, Washington.

3. Col de Turini - France

5. 9 de Julio Avenue – Buenos Aires, Argentina
Need more room to roam after the Spreuerhofstraße? Well how about 9 de Julio Avenue, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The day Argentina gained its independence the locals celebrated in a big way… with a big street! They named their main street in downtown Buenos Aires, 9 de Julio. Now, this is not just some ordinary street. This street is a whopping nine lanes wide with landscaped gardens for medians making this the widest street in the world. Bet your not feeling claustrophobic anymore… are you?

6. White Rim Trail, Utah, USA
So, you liked the adrenaline from the Col de Turini, but you are looking for something a bit more rugged? Well have we got the road for you! Nestled in the Canyonlands National Park in Utah, White Rim Road is 103 miles of rugged twists and turns that wind down into the very bottom of the canyon its self. Not only is this a beautiful ride it is down right dangerous. So bring your 4X4, plenty of water and make sure you have on your head screwed on straight - this is one heck of a challenge, but we promise you won't regret it!

7. Lombard St - San Francisco, USA
OK, you liked all those twists and turns, but are ready to be back on the paved road, so it looks like Lombard St. in San Francisco is for you. This street is the winner for the world’s most crooked street. OK, so only about a quarter of a mile of this street (between Hyde and Leavenworth) zig and zag this way and that way, but this is no accident. This section of Lambard St. is at a 27% gradient, which makes it difficult for cars and pedestrians alike; hence the zig-zag section with a 5 mph speed limit makes it manageable.

8. Stelvio Pass - Italy
Lombard St didn’t have enough of a wow factor for you? Well that's OK, come on over to Stelvio Pass in Italy. Located in the Eastern Alps this road was originally built between 1820-1825 and has changed very little over time. The Stelvio Pass Road connects the Valtellina with Merano and the upper Adige valley. At 1.7 miles above sea level with 48 white-knuckle hair pin turns this road is nothing but challenging. With some steep inclines and tight squeezes at a height of 2757 meters, this stunner is the second highest paved road in the Alps; so one thing is to be for certain - the views are breathtaking and the drive is challenging.

9. The Road to Hana - Maui, USA
Ready to come back down to sea level? Well there's no better place to do it then Hawaii! Jungles and waterfalls line the road to Hana, and the views are killer! Well, maybe we should have picked a different word. After all, to get to Hana you will need to travel 52 miles of cliffhanging winding roads with some 600 twists and turns that include narrow bridges (50 of them) and blind curves. If that is not enough so scare you off in some places it is only wide enough for one small car at a time! This is one white-knuckle beauty that is sure to please with a great big dose of adrenaline and lush jungle and ocean views to boot.

10. The Road of Death - Bolivia
OK, so you have had enough of the pretty and the “slightly dangerous” but are you ready to take on El Camino de la Muerte? Yungas Road or the El Camino de la Muerte, ‘Road of Death’ is a 43-mile long road that connects La Paz and Coroico, in Bolivia. Infamous as the “world’s most dangerous road” with extreme drop offs of 2,000 ft, no side guardrail and only the width of a single car, it is estimated that nearly 200 to 300 people are killed every year on this road. To make the journey even more of a hazard it is often muddy, covered with rocks from landslides and very foggy with low visibility. This is no ordinary road; this is a death trap.

Awesome Modern Day Iron Sculptures

The Alien King sculpture contains over 4,000 unique parts including pieces of a car, a boat, a dishwasher, a motorbike, a television and other recycled steel. Aliens are vicious, primal, horrifying creatures. They “live in a hive, follow a queen to the death, and simply hunt to survive.” The Alien King and the Predator stand over 7 1/2 feet tall.
Cards
Bryan Berg builds his sculptures from playing cards. He has stacked cards in the U.S., Canada, across Europe, and Asia. This Harvard trained architect broke the Guinness World Record for the World’s Tallest House of Freestanding Playing Cards in 1992 at the age of seventeen. His latest record-holding sculpture is over 25 feet tall.

Creepy & Disturbing Sculptures

Then there’s really creepy, strange sculptures. These by Olivier De Sagazan give voice to the unspeakable. One person’s art is another person’s nightmare. His disturbing sculptures depict the perforation of the body by a foreign element, weapons, and instruments of torture

Eternal Love

In Victoria, Australia, there is a sculpture at Mt Macedon Cemetery to depict a wife’s eternal love for her husband. In 1930, this was considered risqué. Yet when Laurence Matheson died, his wife commissioned this sculpture as an expression of her undying love for him.

Harbin Ice Sculptures

In Harbin, China, massive ice sculptures were illuminated from both the inside and outside at the 26th annual International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival. The ice was harvested from the frozen surface of the Songhua River and then turned into large scale, temporary sculptures.

Metal Junk To Art
Joe Pogan makes animal sculptures from “found metal” objects. He hides interesting objects in his welded art sculptures. Pogan stated, “The stranger the piece of metal the better, since the end goal is an eye-catching, fascinating amalgamation of metal with odd nooks and crannies you can explore for hours.”

Large Lego Sculptures
Nathan Sawaya creates his sculptures out of Lego bricks. These 3-dimensional sculptures range from portraits, large scale replicas and smaller scale Lego brick art. Sawaya suggests a Lego project can be a big as your imagination and your wallet.

San Francisco Toothpick Sculpture

Scott Weaver spent over 30 years working on constructing San Francisco from toothpicks. His sculpture took 3,000 hours, more than 100,000 toothpicks, and cases of Elmer’s glue to build his 9 foot tall city. It has 15 feet of internal tracks to roll ping-pong balls starting at various entrances and all winding their way to the bottom. Weaver turned down a $40,000 offer from Ripley’s Believe It or Not for his rendition of downtown San Francisco.

Shi Jinsogn
Shi Jinsong creates razor-sharp baby accessories. His stainless steel sculptures are part of his Na Zha Baby Boutique exhibition. The sadistic tricycle, cradle, rocking horse, stroller and walker are only the sharp tip of his artistic creations.

Marc Da Cunha Lopes – SKLT

Sculptures can be thought provoking but also manipulated in photography. Photographer Marc Da Cunha Lopes presented a photo series titled SKLT. The images are three-dimensional skeletons of massive creatures within semi-industrial abandoned buildings. The work represents the nature of archaeology combined with how we as humans leave our landscapes “riddled with skeletons of many different sorts.”

Star Wars and Aliens
Recycled and repurposed parts have long been used for Steampunk style sculptures. Star Wars stormtrooper, Boba Fett, and another alien were spotted in the Al Jabber gallery at Dubai’s Mall of Emirates.

Metal: Terminator & Alien Queen
Scaring people, it’s not just for Halloween. In fact, metal sculptures of terminators and aliens can be found in numerous countries from tiny to huge. The life-sized terminator would either be a conversation starter or scare your neighbors. The Alien Queen sculpture weighs in at about 1,200 pounds. 90% of this Alien comes from recycled motorcycle parts. If you think she’s frightening, you should meet her mate.

In Grenada, West Indies, 26 life-sized figures await divers to view them in their underwater playground. The Vicissitudes were cast from children with diverse ethnic backgrounds now living 14 feet below the surface.

You know you are a Super Geek when your gravestone is a computer. That's just awesome and wrong at the same time.

Ray Tse, Jr. fantasized as a teenager about getting a driver's license and owning a luxurious Mercedes Benz. Ray died in 1981 at the age of 15. His desire was posthumously and eerily fulfilled when his millionaire brother, David, commissioned a 36-ton granite memorial sculpted to resemble a full-size 1982 Mercedes Benz 2400 Diesel limousine.

The granite automobile, reported to have cost about $250k, is parked on a low pedestal behind the family mausoleum in Linden, NJ. On both the trunk and the front, granite vanity license plates read: "RAY TSE." The carving is meticulous, accurate in every detail, save for the missing hood ornament and sideview mirrors (which would have been too easy for vandals to snap off). Three stonecutters spent 1 1/2 years creating it from a 66-ton block of granite at Rock of Ages, Barre, VT.

Well, a man sitting in his sofa looking serious into the horizon and a woman is seated in another one, in his back, but they are looking into opposites sites. They are placed like that because he died first, so the family made hisMausoleum . Some years after, when his wife died too, in her testament she asked to be placed in that way so as to represent their marriage: they spent their last 30 years without speaking a word.

When he spotted a mark on his apartment window, this chap just had to pop out to give the glass a quick wipe with a squeegee.

Nothing odd about that – except that he lives 400ft up on the 34th floor of a tower block in Jumeirah Beach, Dubai.

He stepped out on to the narrow ledge and, holding the frame, stretched across to wipe away the annoying smudge.
